He began importing Portuguese marbles such as Tavira and Estremoz for sale to large building contractors. Through his natural charm and dogged persistence Brian secured orders to import prefabricated stone for several landmark developments including the Intercontinental Hotel on Park Lane in 1971 and the Sheraton Park Tower in Knightsbridge 1973.

In 1973 the business purchased stone saws and finishing equipment and began fabricating stone under a railway arch in Hammersmith.  The business could now offer a full bespoke service to customers for single property projects and opened a showroom at 175 Munster Road in Fulham.

In the depth of the recession in 1975 Brian moved the showroom upmarket to 90 Fulham Road in Chelsea. After enduring an IMF bailout and “the winter of discontent” the business was growing strongly by the end of the 1970s and the team of craftsmen in Hammersmith were running out of room. In 1982 Brian moved the fabrication operation from Hammersmith to a much more spacious premises at 20 Smuggler’s Way, Wandsworth.

The business continued to thrive through the 1980s and moved next door to 22 Smuggler’s Way in 1988 to the premises which has now served the business for the last 31 years. Following the move Brian established the name of Marble City Limited for the business, stopped bidding for work on large developments and concentrated on offering a bespoke service for the development and refurbishment of single properties.

In 1993 Brian closed the showroom at 90 Fulham Road and instead opened a showroom at the manufacturing premises in Smuggler’s Way.  The business has gone from strength to strength at its new location through the 1990s and established a strong reputation within the trade for the quality of its craftsmanship.

Brian retired from the business at the start of the new millennium.  The business is now managed by Gavin. With an excellent team of craftsmen, a sales team with unrivalled stone expertise, direct links to the leading quarries and a convenient location in the heart of London, we are confident that we can continue to delight our customers.
